On Wednesday, a small group of children from our Early Years department visited Icknield Court Care Home in Princes Risborough. Inspired by the Channel 4 programme “Old People’s Home for Four Year olds”, the visit gave the children the opportunity to interact with the elderly residents as well as perform a number of songs. Accompanied by Mrs Rimmer on the piano, the children sang “Kumbaya”, “This little light of mine” and “When you’re smiling”. The children loved performing for the residents who were equally delighted to be entertained by the children, and commented that they were “wonderful” and “delightful” and sang so well.
Such a visit as this gives the children the opportunity to develop an understanding of the diverse community in which they live, and the confidence to interact within this environment. The children can learn a lot of important life skills from the older generation and develop a mutual respect for others from a young age.
We would like to involve all of the Early Years children in this initiative over the course of the academic year, as well as some of the older children further up the school. Plans are already underway for another visit, this time from our older students, to perform songs from our forthcoming show “Joseph”.
Grateful thanks to Mrs Rimmer for helping the children to learn the songs and for giving them the confidence to perform, and to the Early Years Team for their ongoing commitment and support in making this project such a success.
